Between Provence and the Alps, the Embrunais district is a grandiose location whatever time of year. Hotel Les Bartavelles is ideal for those interested in skiing in the Orres ski area, hiking in the Écrins and Queyras Parks or undertaking aquatic activities on Lake Serre-Ponçon, just a stone’s throw away from our hotel.
Our hotel is located in Crots, just 2 km from Embrun, named the Nice of the Alps for its pleasant climate and sunshine. As you walk through Embrun’s old town with its Provençal ambiance, experience its wonderful heritage as you discover quiet streets lined with colourful houses, pretty squares adorned with fountains, vaulted passage ways and walls decorated with sundials. The Notre-Dame-du-Réal cathedral, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, is one of the most important religious monuments in the French Alps. Not far from the cathedral is the Tour Brune, former dungeon of the archbishops’ palace from the 12th century, which now houses an information centre about the Écrins National Park.
Near Les Bartavelles, visit the Fort de Mont Dauphin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Marquis de Vauban (chief architect to Louis XIV). Then see Boscodon Abbey, built in 1130 by Cistercian monks next to the great forest of the same name, plus the Château-Queyras. Also visit Saint-Véran (the highest village in Europe at 2040 m) or the Mexican villas of the Ubaye Valley. Plus, don’t miss Briançon and its old town (known as the Ville Haute, i.e. upper town), fortified by the Marquis de Vauban and featuring fantastic old fountains and an impressive collegial church.
